Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment by adding new affixes. They can also improve its base stats or add additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Upgrade components

There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be put on any type of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that have a type restriction. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, include their name at the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for instance adding the word Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool and replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding inscriptions which can be freely swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from earlier versions. item upgrades is now classified into tracks and each item can only be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level however, the materials needed do not increase as much.
