Evidence suggests an association of air pollution with sleep quality. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the effect of black carbon, a key component of ambient particulate matter, on sleep.
To investigate the association of long-term exposure to black carbon and sleep quality in a group of college students.
A retrospective cohort study was conducted in five universities in different regions of China. The concentrations of black carbon and other environment factors were defined as the averages during the 6 years prior to the recruitment. Averagely daily dose of black carbon exposure was estimated according to the respiratory rate. Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) with a cutoff >5 indicating sleep disturbance. Linear regression and logistic regression models were used to estimate the association. The sensitivity analyses were conducted to estimate the effects of 1-month, 6-month and 1-year mean levels of exposure to black carbon on sleep quality.
A total of 20,053 incoming college students were included. 29.3% reported impaired sleep quality, with a mean PSQI score of 4.3 ± 2.2. The logistic regression showed that the risk of impaired sleep quality was positively associated with black carbon exposure, especially in the highest quantile (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.11-1.43) compared with the lowest quartile after adjusting for potential confounders. Subgroup analysis showed that the effect of black carbon on sleep quality was stronger in participants with higher BMI, lower household income, and lower parental educational level. The results of sensitivity analyses were similar with main analyses.
Long-term exposure to black carbon is associated with sleep disturbance in college students. Improvement of air quality may help improve sleep quality.

Commonly, PhACs exist as complex mixtures in aquatic systems, causing potential adverse effects to the environment and human health than those of individual compounds. Based on the increasing interest in the contamination of water resources by PhACs, the photocatalytic degradation of Cimetidine and Amisulpride as a mixture in combination with their toxic and genotoxic effects before and after the treatment were evaluated for the first time. The toxic, genotoxic and cytotoxic effects were investigated using the Trypan Blue Exclusion Test and the Cytokinesis Block MicroNucleus (CBMN) assay in cultured human lymphocytes. The photocatalytic degradation of the PhACs was studied in ultrapure water and environmentally relevant matrices using UV-A and visible (Vis) irradiation and C-TiO2 (TiO2 Kronos vlp 7000) as photocatalyst. High removal percentages were observed for both compounds under UV-A and Vis irradiation in ultrapure water. In lake and drinking water a slower degradation rate was shown that could be attributed to the complex composition of these matrices. Scavenging experiments highlighted the significant role of h+ and O2●- in the degradation mechanisms under both irradiation sources. Oxidation, dealkylation and deamination were the main degradation pathways. Regarding the individual compounds, Amisulpride was found to be more cytotoxic than Cimetidine. No significant differences of the genotoxic effects during the treatment were observed. However, a slight increase in cytotoxicity was observed at the first stages of the process. At the end of the process under both UV-A and Vis light, non-significant cytotoxic/toxic effects were observed. Based on the results, heterogeneous photocatalysis can be considered as an effective process for the treatment of complex mixtures without the formation of harmful transformation products.Since municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWIBA) contains some heavy metals that are harmful to the groundwater and soil, this study proposes an effective and new approach to deal with high-volume MSWIBA. Selecting 70% MSWIBA, 10% ordinary Portland cement (OPC), 10% fly ash/ground granulated blast furnace slag (FA/GGBFS), and 1% volume of polypropylene (PP) fiber as the raw materials, this project designed and manufactured cold-bonded fiber aggregates (CBFAs) and applied them into sustainable concrete. It was found that the water absorption of CBFAs was between 12 and 14%, the bulk density was between 900 and 1100 kg/m3, and the compressive strength of single particle was greater than 1.8 MPa. And it was found that the mechanical strength and bulk density of CBFAs were positively correlated, while the mechanical strength and water absorption were negatively correlated. The leaching behaviors of CBFAs on Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr were successfully suppressed to less than 1% of that originally from MSWIBA,he alternative to natural aggregates in sustainable concrete, and this can also advance waste recycling, and solidify high volume heavy metals in infrastructures.Commercial Hog Operations (CHOs) produce large amounts of fecal waste, which is often treated in lagoons and sprayed onto fields as fertilizer. The effects of these systems on proximal water quality compared to ambient conditions have not been well-studied, and are particularly important for understanding the dissemination of fecal bacteria and antimicrobial resistance. A longitudinal, case-control watershed study was designed to study effects of CHOs on microbial water quality among watersheds with similar soil, land use, human population, and area. We compared watersheds with (n = 13) and without (n = 9) CHOs over one year measuring fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), microbial source tracking (MST) fecal markers, and antimicrobial resistance in isolated Escherichia coli. E. coli concentrations were higher (p less then 0.001) at sites downstream of CHOs (1284 CFU/100 mL, n = 103) compared to background sites (687 CFU/100 mL, n = 74). The human MST marker HF183 was detected at similarly low concentrations (PR ce water. In river catchments used as drinking water sources, high pesticide concentrations in abstracted waters require an expensive treatment step prior to supply. The acid herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) is particularly problematic as it is highly mobile in the soil-water environment following application. Here, an agri-environmental scheme (AES) was introduced to a large-scale catchment (384 km2) to potentially reduce the burden of pesticides in the water treatment process. The main measure offered was contractor application of glyphosate by weed wiping as a substitute for boom spraying of MCPA, supported by educational and advisory activities. A combined innovation applied in the assessment was, i) a full before-after-control-impact (BACI) framework over four peak application seasons (April to October 2018 to 2021) where a neighbouring catchment (386 km2) did not have an AES and, ii) an enhanced monitoring approach where river discharge and MCPA concentrations were measured synchronously in eaES.While global streamflow reanalysis provides valuable information for environmental modelling and management, it is not yet known how effective they are in characterizing the local flow regime. This paper presents a novel evaluation of the potential of streamflow reanalysis in the flow regime analysis by accounting for the effects of reservoir operation. Specifically, the indicators of hydrologic alteration (IHA) are used to characterize the five components of flow regime for both reservoir inflow and outflow; the performance of raw reanalysis is evaluated and the raw reanalysis is furthermore corrected by using the quantile mapping for improved flow regime analysis. The results of 35 major reservoirs in California show that raw reanalysis tends to be effective in characterizing the regime of reservoir inflow and that it is generally less effective in capturing outflow. For both inflow and outflow, the performance of raw reanalysis is beset by the existence of systematic errors. The quantile mapping is effective in error correction and therefore considerably improves the performances of reanalysis in characterizing the regime of not only reservoir inflow but also outflow. Nevertheless, for both reservoir inflow and outflow, the low flow part tends to be more difficult to handle than the high flow part. The evaluation conducted in this paper can serve as a roadmap for further exploitations of the potential of global streamflow reanalysis for flow regime analysis at regional and even continental scales.Soil heavy metal distribution maps can provide decision-making information for pollution control and agricultural management. However, the estimation of heavy metals is sensitive to the resolution of the soil spectra due to their sparse content in soils. The purposes of this study were to test the sensitivity of Ni, Zn and Pb prediction results to variations in spectral resolution, then to map their spatial distributions over a large area. In addition, the effectiveness of spectral feature extraction was investigated. In total, 92 soil samples and corresponding field soil spectra were obtained from the Tongwei-Zhuanglang area in Gansu Province, China. Airborne HyMap hyperspectral image of this area was acquired simultaneously. Three satellite image spectra (AHSIGF-5, Hyperion, AHSIZY-1 02D) were simulated using the field spectra which were measured under real environmental conditions rather than laboratory conditions. The combination of genetic algorithm and partial least squares regression (GA-PLSR) was used
Despite cumulative evidence reports the interaction effects of physical activity (PA) and air pollution on lung function, the findings have been inconsistent. We aimed to identify the threshold values that reverse the beneficial effects of PA on lung function.
This multistage probability sampling study examined 13,032 individuals aged ≥45 years across China from 2011 to 2015. City-level particulate matter 2.5 μm or less in diameter (PM
) were estimated based on a two-stage machine learning model, with a spatial resolution of 0.1° × 0.1°. We assessed PA and a range of covariates using standardized self-reported questionnaires. RK-33 DNA inhibitor The peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured using a peak flow meter. We used mixed-effects linear regression models to examine the associations between PA and PM
, and their interactions with PEF.
Participants were 60.4 ± 9.4 years old [mean ± standard deviation (SD)]. The mean ± SD of PM
and PEF was 54.4 ± 23.0 μg/m
and 273 ± 116 L/min, respectively. Each 10 μg/m
increase cross populations and places, the findings suggested that reducing air pollution could enhance the benefits of PA on lung function.Clinoptilolite zeolite (Z) has been widely used for reducing nutrient loss and improving crop productivity. However, the impacts of zeolite addition on CH4 and N2O emissions in rice fields under various irrigation regimes are still unclear. Therefore, a three-year field experiment using a split-plot design evaluated the effects of zeolite addition and irrigation regimes on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, grain yield, water productivity and net ecosystem economic profit (NEEP) in a paddy field. The field experiment included two irrigation regimes (CF continuous flooding irrigation; AWD alternate wetting and drying irrigation) as the main plots, and three zeolite additions (0, 5 and 10 t ha-1) as the subplots. The results indicated that AWD regime decreased seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions by 54%-71% while increasing seasonal cumulative N2O emissions by 14%-353% across the three years, compared with CF regime. Consequently, the yield-scaled global warming potential under AWD regime decreased by 10%-60% while grain yield, water productivity and NEEP improving by 4.
