In elderly, the fractures in C1-C2 are a common entity. Poor bone quality and wide range of motion hamper the natural bone fusion, thus making surgery often the only possible way to deal with the underlying pathology. The proximity to important neurovascular structures represents the stabilization in this segment a challenge to the surgical team. There are two major techniques, which are used to achieve a dorsal fusion in the C1-C2 Segment Goel/Harms and Magerl techniques. The reported risk for damaging the vertebral artery in both techniques lies between 8% and 9,5% using a C-Arm. In Goel/Harms technique lateral mass screws in C1 and pedicle screws in C2 are placed. A transarticular screw is placed on both sides C1-C2 in Magerl technique in order to achieve stabilization of the C1-C2 Segment. By using the new navigational methods for a better imaging of the bony structures (O-Arm), this risk could be reduced further down. The risk for injury of the vertebral artery using the O-Arm navigation depends on the pssed. Parental reflective functioning (PRF) refers to a parent's effort to see his/her child as a separate individual person from early on, and to be curious of the child's own thoughts and feelings. Parenting abilities are affected by the parent's emotion regulation and emotional availability. Alexithymia as a personality construct with emotional deficits and poor imagination could potentially affect also PRF, but studies on parental alexithymia are still scarce. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between parental alexithymic traits and PRF, which to date has not been explored. As most of the parenting research concern only mothers, an additional aim was to study also fathers. The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the 14-item Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ-Fi) were filled by 1882 mothers and 994 fathers at six months postpartum as part of the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. A significant negative association between TAS-20 total score and PRFQ-Fi total score among both genders was found. The main alexithymia dimension responsible for this association was Externally Oriented Thinking. The results suggest that alexithymic traits indeed are related to parental reflective functioning, but more studies are needed to explore the direction of this relation. Humic acid (HA) plays vital roles in regulating the environmental behaviors of metals and thus their toxicity to biota. However, the inner relation between metal bioavailability to soil organisms and the presence of HA with different molecular weight (Mw) is not well documented. In this study, we separated HAs into four fractions with Mw range of 5-30k Da, and discussed their ability to alleviating the toxicity of Cd and Pb to earthworm. The bioaccumulation capacities (Cmax) increased in order of UF1 less then UF2 less then UF3 less then UF4, which is in line with the variations of bioavailable concentrations of Cd and Pb in soil. Variations of Mw and binding capacities of HA determine the accumulation behavior in soil solution. The unsatisfactory of biotic ligand model fitting and the differences in fractions of the total biotic ligand sites (f) in earthworm bound by Cd and Pb suggested that only free species of Cd could be considered as biological available to earthworm, while the Pb-HAs complexes have potential ability to interact with earthworm membrane. Antioxidant enzymes are effective biomarkers, and HA with lower Mw play more important roles in restricting the toxicity of soil Cd and Pb to earthworm. These results reveal the different mechanism for HA controlling metal bioavailability between Cd and Pb in soil environment. Exposure to some environmental pollutants increases the risk of developing inflammatory disorders such as steatosis and cardiometabolic diseases. Diets high in fermentable fibers such as inulin can modulate the gut microbiota and lessen the severity of pro-inflammatory diseases, especially in individuals with elevated circulating cholesterol. Thus, we aimed to test the hypothesis that hyperlipidemic mice fed a diet enriched with 8% inulin would be protected from the pro-inflammatory toxic effects of PCB 126. find more Four groups of male Ldlr-/- mice were fed a high cholesterol diet containing 8% inulin or 8% cellulose (control) for 12 weeks. At weeks 2 and 4, mice were exposed to PCB 126 or vehicle (control). PCB 126 exposure induced wasting and impaired glucose tolerance, which were attenuated by inulin consumption. PCB 126 exposure induced hepatic lipid accumulation and increased inflammatory gene expression, which were both decreased by inulin consumption. In addition, inulin feeding decreased atherosclerotic lesion development in the aortic root and modulated the expression of enzymes related to glycolysis. Finally, 16S rRNA sequencing of gut microbial populations showed that PCB 126 modulated multiple microbiota genera (e.g., 3-fold decrease in Allobaculum and 3-fold increase in Coprococcus) which were normalized in inulin fed mice. Overall our data support the hypothesis that a dietary intervention that targets the gut microbiota may be an effective means of attenuating dioxin-like pollutant-mediated diseases. BACKGROUND The association between temperature and mortality has been widely reported. However, it remains largely unclear whether inflammation-related diseases, caused by excessive or inappropriate inflammatory reaction, may be affected by ambient temperature, particularly in low-income areas. OBJECTIVES To explore the association between ambient temperature and clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases in rural villages in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, during 2012─2015. METHODS Daily data on inflammation-related diseases and weather conditions were collected from 258 villages in Haiyuan (161 villages) and Yanchi (97 villages) counties during 2012─2015. A Quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the association between temperature and clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases. Stratified analyses were performed by types of diseases including arthritis, gastroenteritis, and gynecological inflammations. RESULTS During the study period, there were 724,788 and 288,965 clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases in Haiyuan and Yanchi, respectively.
