CONCLUSIONS Reduction in ultrafiltration rate and blood pressure are associated with improved myocardial parameters in hemodialysis recipients independently of solute clearance or dialysis time. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Rheum emodi Wall., is an important medicinal plant extensively used in Ayurvedic and Unani systems of traditional medicine. It is known to possess antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, wound healing and immune enhancing activities. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of the current study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity and synergistic potential of different solvent fractions and phytocompounds of Rheum emodi rhizome against bacterial and fungal pathogens. MATERIAL AND METHODS The antimicrobial and synergistic potential of the crude methanolic extract, different solvent fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and residual aqueous) and isolated phytocompounds of the rhizome of Rheum emodi were assayed by broth microdilution method. The bioactive phytocompounds were isolated through silica TLC and quantified using HPTLC and HPLC. The bioactive phytocompounds were identified by LC-MS analysis. RESULTS Phytochemical analysis of the sub-fractions showed that temodin showed profound synergistic activity in combination with antibacterial and antifungal antibiotics and lowered the dosage of antibiotics by 4-257 folds. CONCLUSIONS The bioassay guided fractionation of R. emodi rhizome methanolic extract identified phytocompounds (emodin, rhein13c6, chrysophanol dimethyl ether and resveratrol) that act as bioavailability enhancers of antibacterial and antifungal antibiotics, hence revealing their potential in treating multidrug resistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS The db/db mice were divided into the model group (Model), metformin group (MET), high-dose AOS group (HAOS), and low-dose AOS group (LAOS). Nondiabetic littermate control db/m mice were used as the normal control group (Control). Mice in AOS groups were treated with AOS (380 or 750 mg/kg) daily, for 8 weeks. At 8 weeks, blood samples were collected to detect lipid and enzyme parameters concerning hepatic function, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Random blood glucose (RBG) test, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and of hepatocytes and formation of collagen fibres markedly reduced, improving the structural disorder in the liver. CONCLUSION The results suggest that AOS could protect the liver in type 2 diabetes, in part by activating insulin in the INS-R/IRS2/PI3K/AKT/Glut4/PPAR-γ signal pathway, facilitating hepatocyte proliferation, and further reducing the blood glucose levels. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Molokhia is highly consumed in Egypt as edible and medicinal plants, and its leaves are used for the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY High-fat diet (HFD) induces gut dysbiosis, which is closely linked to metabolic diseases including obesity and leaky gut. The effects of molokhia (Corchorus olitorius L.) on anti-obesity and gut health were investigated in this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effects of a water-soluble extract from molokhia leaves (WM) on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and on body weight, gut permeability, hormone levels, fecal enzyme activity of the intestinal microflora, and gut microbiota in HFD-induced C57BL/6J mice were examined. RESULTS WM treatment significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Mice treated with 100 mg/kg WM had 13.1, 52.4, and 17.4% significantly lower body weights, gut permeability, and hepatic lipid accumulation than those in the HFD group, respectively. In addition, WM influenced gut health by inhibiting metabolic endotoxemia and colonic inflammation. It also altered the composition of the gut microbiota; in particular, it increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and decreased that of Desulfovibrio. CONCLUSION Our results extend our understanding of the beneficial effects of WM consumption, including the prevention of gut dysbiosis and obesity. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ethnoveterinary medicine (EVM) practices remain a common feature of South African animal husbandry, particularly in rural livestock healthcare. This review provides an update of research undertaken on South African EVM from 2009 until 2019. AIM OF THE STUDY This review collates information and investigates trends in the increasing field of EVM research in South Africa over the last decade. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search was conducted using available databases including ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Dissertations, theses, books and technical reports were also searched. RESULTS In the past decade, ethnoveterinary surveys conducted in South Africa report the use of 139 plants from 50 families used against 21 animal diseases and conditions. Leaves, roots and bark have remained popular plant parts used for EVM. In terms of livestock species reported, the major focus was on cattle, goats and poultry. Only four of the nine provinces in the country have been surveyed. CONCLUSIONS Relatively few publications reporting on ethnoveterinary surveys have originated from South Africa. These papers refer to many plants used for a variety of commonly encountered animal diseases and afflictions. With reference to recently published guidelines on conducting ethnobotanical surveys, several recommendations can be made to improve the robustness of surveys documenting the use of plants for EVM in South Africa.
