Therefore, this study aimed to investigate preoperative factors associated with complicated appendicitis and to develop a scoring system that distinguishes complicated appendicitis in children aged less then 10 years. Patients aged less then 10 years who underwent surgical treatment for acute appendicitis between 2011 and 2019 were included in this study, after excluding those with insufficient medical records, with other diseases that affect the length of hospitalization, or without formal reports of abdominal computed tomography (CT) or ultrasonography (US). Complicated appendicitis was defined as hospitalization for ≥5 days postoperatively or readmission within 30 days postoperatively. Patient characteristics, symptoms, physical examination, laboratory data, and radiographic results were collected to determine predictors of complicated appendicitis. The mean age of 279 patients was 7.3 years. Among them, 57 patients had complicated appendicitis. A scoring system was developed based on the following 5 independent risk factors derived from multiple logistic regression analysis body temperature, anorexia, diarrhea, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and presence of periappendiceal free fluid on CT or US. This case report aims to illustrate symptoms, imaging, and treatment of an isolated popliteal tendon rupture in an adolescent female. An athletic 14-year-old female presented with right knee pain 4 weeks after a basketball injury in which she dove for the ball and fell, twisting and striking her knee. She had diffuse pain on both sides of the right knee for 3 weeks and pain with running, jumping or twisting. The knee exam was otherwise unremarkable. A right knee MRI demonstrated a complete rupture of the popliteal tendon. No other knee injuries were visualized. The patient was treated non-operatively and gradually returned to normal activities and sports at 6 weeks post injury. On 6-year follow up, the patient had no residual pain or instability and was able to play basketball without difficulty. Isolated popliteal tendon ruptures are extremely rare and difficult to diagnose given non-specific clinical exam findings. While these ruptures can be difficult to visualize on MRI, imaging can help to clarify the diagnosis by ruling out other injuries with similar clinical presentations. Although a few of these structural parameters, primarily linked to the nanoparticle and the mirror morphology, have been identified, the impact of molecular assembly and organization of the spacer layer between them has often been left uncharacterized. Here, we experimentally investigate how the complex and reconfigurable nature of a thiol-based self-assembled monolayer (SAM) adsorbed on the mirror surface impacts the optical properties of the NPoMs. We fabricate NPoMs with distinct molecular organizations by controlling the incubation time of the mirror in the thiol solution. Afterward, we investigate the structural changes that occur under laser irradiation by tracking the bonding dipole plasmon mode, while also monitoring Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering from the molecules as a probe of their integrity. First, we find an effective decrease in the SAM height as the laser power increases, compatible with an irreversible change of molecule orientation caused by heating. Second, we observe that the nanocavities prepared with a densely packed and more ordered monolayer of molecules are more prone to changes in their resonance compared to samples with sparser and more disordered SAMs. Our measurements indicate that molecular orientation and packing on the mirror surface play a key role in determining the stability of NPoM structures and hence highlight the under-recognized significance of SAM characterization in the development of NPoM-based applications.
