The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced with foreign words, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto made products to meet the demands for modern, new urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the nation that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.
In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and applied the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet, for instance it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than typical models.
The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their evolution, its group companies (all related to ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto the band, members of the group did sessions for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group was formed as four members and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster, but not without difficulties. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, the members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distortion AOR and should sound totally wrong, but works amazingly well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
