The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade item s, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs by a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now classified into tracks and each item is able to be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level up, but the required materials do not increase as much.
