The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature.
