The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read them. However, many of the words were being replaced with foreign ones, like dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's growth. In the early years of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of modern and contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers in order to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the company's global market share.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company also employed the just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level of satisfaction with the customer.
Toto has continued to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The company's first museum opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions about Toto's iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto the members of the group performed session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly simple rock group. The group began as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster, but it was not without its difficulties. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album opens up hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distortion AOR that could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
