Between 2009 and 2017, calf mortality in the Dutch dairy sector showed a slight but steady increase. The Dutch dairy industry decided to act and supported the development of several data-driven tools that were implemented from 2018 on. The tools informed farmers about their calf mortality rates and stimulated them to improve. The Trend Analysis Surveillance Component of the Dutch cattle Health Surveillance System provided the possibility to evaluate the calf mortality in Dutch dairy herds before and after implementation of these tools. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between calf mortality and i) all actions that were taken by the Dutch dairy industry to improve the quality of calf rearing and ii) other potential management or environmental factors associated with calf mortality in Dutch dairy herds. Census data from approximately 98 % of all Dutch dairy herds were available from July 2014 until June 2019. Four different calf mortality indicators were defined perinatal calf mortality risd also extreme outside temperatures were associated with higher calf mortality. Given that the different tools were implemented nation-wide and a control group was lacking, we could not prove that implementing the different tools caused the reduction in calf mortality. We do however, believe that all the actions and communication towards improvement of calf rearing in dairy herds led to an increased awareness among farmers towards the importance of calf rearing management and therefore a reduction in calf mortality on national level.
Delayed evaluation of stroke may contribute to COVID-19 pandemic-related morbidity and mortality. This study evaluated patient characteristics, process measures and outcomes associated with the decline in stroke presentation during the early pandemic.
Volumes of stroke presentations, intravenous thrombolytic administrations, and mechanical thrombectomies from 52 hospitals from January 1-June 30, 2020 were analyzed with piecewise linear regression and linear spline models. Univariate analysis compared pandemic (case) and pre-pandemic (control) groups defined in relation to the nadir of daily strokes during the study period. Significantly different patient characteristics were further evaluated with logistic regression, and significantly different process measures and outcomes were re-analyzed after propensity score matching.
Analysis of 7,389 patients found daily stroke volumes decreased 0.91/day from March 12-26 (p<0.0001), reaching a nadir 35.0% less than expected, and increased 0.15 strokes/day froinitiatives should target these populations.

Public health messaging and initiatives should target these populations.Candida albicans is a pathogen equipped with a variety of commensal and virulence traits that help it colonize the microbiota and invade host tissue during infection. In this study, we investigated the potential anticandidal activity of 3-[2-(4-(4-methoxyphenyl)thiazol-2-yl)hydrazino)]butan-1-ol (MT), a thiazolylhydrazone compound synthesized by our group, and identified it as a promising antifungal agent. The activity of MT was evaluated in vitro and in vivo against C. albicans as well as its ability to inhibit virulence factors. For this, the ability of MT to inhibit the adhesion of C. albicans to human buccal epithelial cells and biofilm formation and filamentation was tested. In addition, the potential in vivo activity of MT was evaluated in murine models of oral candidiasis. Our results confirmed the antifungal activity of MT, with a minimal inhibitory concentration range of 0.5-2 µg/mL. Indeed, MT treatment in vitro decreased the expression of C. 3,4-Dichlorophenyl isothiocyanate mouse albicans genes involved in biofilm formation and morphogenesis and encoding hydrolytic enzymes, which was also confirmed through phenotypic observations. In addition, MT promoted a decrease in the colony forming units recovered from the tongues of mice with oral candidiasis. In this work, we present a potent antivirulence compound that shows potential for candidiasis therapy, especially for topical use.
To date, the evidence regarding False Belief (FB) abilities in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) has been both sparse and contradictory. Our study is the first systematic investigation targeting the relation between FB, mental age (MA), syntactic abilities (SA) and verbal short-term memory (VSTM) in individuals with DS so far.
27 German-speaking children/adolescents with DS (aged 10;0-20;1 years) completed a location-change FB-task and four standardized measures assessing nonverbal intelligence & MA, VSTM, receptive and productive SA.
37.5 % (n = 9) of our participants passed the FB-task, whereas 62.5 % (n = 15) did not answer the target question correctly. While no significant differences emerged for MA and language abilities in individuals who passed and those who failed FB-testing, VSTM came out as a significantly associated factor for FB-performance in a median split analysis of raw-scores.

In contrast to previous findings on children with developmental disorders such as autism, developmental language deficit or hearing impairment, general and specific SA related to sentence complementation turned out to be of limited relevance for FB-understanding in individuals with DS.

We aim to delve into the epidemiology, clinical features, and outcomes of neonatal dengue, thus avoid misdiagnosis and obtain early intervention. Study design A retrospective study was conducted at Children's Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam with laboratory-confirmed dengue in neonates by positive viral antigen nonstructural protein one rapid test (NS1) and positive IgM antibody for dengue by MAC-ELISA. Results We have included 32 neonates in this study with 25% cases were misdiagnosed with neonatal sepsis, and 12.5% cases were misdiagnosed with neonatal immune thrombocytopenia at the beginning. The median time between the first day of the mother's onset of fever and childbirth was -1 days (IQR -2, 2). The patient's clinical manifestation included petechiae 87.5% (28/32), pharyngeal mucosal hemorrhage 6.3% (2/32), and hepatomegaly occurred 75% (24/32).
