Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting patient functioning and quality of life. Aside from the motor symptoms of PD, cognitive impairment may occur at early stages of PD and has a substantial impact on patient emotional and physical health. Detecting these early signs through actual daily functioning while the patient is still functionally independent is challenging. We developed DailyCog-a smartphone application for the detection of mild cognitive impairment. DailyCog includes an environment that simulates daily tasks, such as making a drink and shopping, as well as a self-report questionnaire related to daily events performed at home requiring executive functions and visual-spatial abilities, and psychomotor speed. We present the detailed design of DailyCog and discuss various considerations that influenced the design. We tested DailyCog on patients with mild cognitive impairment in PD. Our case study demonstrates how the markers we used coincide with the cognitive levels of the users. We present the outcome of our usability study that found that most users were able to use our app with ease, and provide details on how various features were used, along with some of the difficulties that were identified.A novel multimodal, multiscale imaging system with augmented reality capability were developed and characterized. The system offers 3D color reflectance imaging, 3D fluorescence imaging, and augmented reality in real time. Multiscale fluorescence imaging was enabled by developing and integrating an in vivo fiber-optic microscope. Real-time ultrasound-fluorescence multimodal imaging used optically tracked fiducial markers for registration. Tomographical data are also incorporated using optically tracked fiducial markers for registration. Furthermore, we characterized system performance and registration accuracy in a benchtop setting. The multiscale fluorescence imaging facilitated assessing the functional status of tissues, extending the minimal resolution of fluorescence imaging to ~17.5 µm. The system achieved a mean of Target Registration error of less than 2 mm for registering fluorescence images to ultrasound images and MRI-based 3D model, which is within clinically acceptable range. The low latency and high frame rate of the prototype system has shown the promise of applying the reported techniques in clinically relevant settings in the future.Disadvantaged groups worldwide, such as low-income and racially/ethnically minoritized people, experience worse health outcomes than more privileged groups, including wealthier and white people. Such health disparities are a major public health issue in several countries around the world. In this systematic review, we examine whether green space shows stronger associations with physical health for disadvantaged groups than for privileged groups. We hypothesize that disadvantaged groups have stronger protective effects from green space because of their greater dependency on proximate green space, as they tend to lack access to other health-promoting resources. We use the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) method and search five databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) to look for articles that examine whether socioeconomic status (SES) or race/ethnicity modify the green space-health associations. Based on this search, we identify 90 articles meeting our inclusion criteria. We find lower-SES people show more beneficial effects than affluent people, particularly when concerning public green spaces/parks rather than green land covers/greenness. Studies in Europe show stronger protective effects for lower-SES people versus higher-SES people than do studies in North America. We find no notable differences in the protective effects of green space between racial/ethnic groups. Collectively, these results suggest green space might be a tool to advance health equity and provide ways forward for urban planners, parks managers, and public health professionals to address health disparities.Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. While various studies have shown the beneficial impact of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-releasing drugs, few have demonstrated the influence of endogenous H2S production. Modulating the predominant enzymatic sources of H2S-cystathionine-β-synthase, cystathionine-γ-lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase-is an emerging and promising research area. This review frames the discussion of harnessing endogenous H2S within the context of a non-ischemic form of cardiomyopathy, termed diabetic cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Little is known of the effects of these dietary interventions on the gut microbiome of PKU patients, particularly in adults. In this study, we sequenced the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene from stool samples collected from adults with PKU (n = 11) and non-PKU controls (n = 21). Gut community diversity was lower in PKU individuals, though this effect was only statistically suggestive. While the child PKU gut microbiome has been previously investigated, this is the first study to explore the gut microbiome of adult PKU patients. We find that microbial diversity in PKU children differs from PKU adults and highlights the need for further studies to understand the effects of dietary restrictions.
