Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded performances.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001.
