Near-infrared (nIR) fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were designed and interfaced with leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana plants to report hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a key signaling molecule associated with the onset of plant stress. The sensor nIR fluorescence response (>900 nm) is quenched by H2O2 with selectivity against other stress-associated signaling molecules and within the plant physiological range (10-100 H2O2 μM). In vivo remote nIR imaging of H2O2 sensors enabled optical monitoring of plant health in response to stresses including UV-B light (-11%), high light (-6%), and a pathogen-related peptide (flg22) (-10%), but not mechanical leaf wounding ( less then 3%). The sensor's high biocompatibility was reflected on similar leaf cell death ( less then 5%) and photosynthetic rates to controls without SWCNT. These optical nanosensors report early signs of stress and will improve our understanding of plant stress communication, provide novel tools for precision agriculture, and optimize the use of agrochemicals in the environment. We investigate twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG), a four-layer system composed of two AB-stacked graphene bilayers rotated with respect to each other by a small angle. Our ab initio band structure calculations reveal a considerable energy gap at the charge-neutrality point that we assign to the intrinsic symmetric polarization (ISP). We then introduce the ISP effect into the tight-binding parametrization and perform calculations on TDBG models that include lattice relaxation effects down to very small twist angles. We identify a narrow region around the magic angle characterized by a manifold of remarkably flat bands gapped out from other states even without external electric fields. To understand the fundamental origin of the magic angle in TDBG, we construct a continuum model that points to a hidden mathematical link to the twisted bilayer graphene model, thus indicating that the band flattening is a fundamental feature of TDBG and is not a result of external fields.Bacteria are important examples of active or self-propelled colloids. Because of their directed motion, they accumulate near interfaces. There, they can become trapped and swim adjacent to the interface via hydrodynamic interactions, or they can adsorb directly and swim in an adhered state with complex trajectories that differ from those in bulk in both form and spatiotemporal implications. We have adopted the monotrichous bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01 as a model species and have studied its motion at oil-aqueous interfaces. We have identified conditions in which bacteria swim persistently without restructuring the interface, allowing detailed and prolonged study of their motion. In addition to characterizing the ensemble behavior of the bacteria, we have observed a gallery of distinct trajectories of individual swimmers on and near fluid interfaces. We attribute these diverse swimming behaviors to differing trapped states for the bacteria in the fluid interface. These trajectory types include Brownian diffusive paths for passive adsorbed bacteria, curvilinear trajectories including curly paths with radii of curvature larger than the cell body length, and rapid pirouette motions with radii of curvature comparable to the cell body length. Finally, we see interfacial visitors that come and go from the interfacial plane. We characterize these individual swimmer motions. This work may impact nutrient cycles for bacteria on or near interfaces in nature. This work will also have implications in microrobotics, as active colloids in general and bacteria in particular are used to carry cargo in this burgeoning field. Finally, these results have implications in engineering of active surfaces that exploit interfacially trapped self-propelled colloids.Polyfluoroarenes work as good radical acceptors in the thermal radical reaction with N-heterocyclic carbene boranes (NHC-boranes) in the presence of di-tert-butyl peroxide. In this reaction, a C-F bond of polyfluoroarenes is substituted with an NHC-boryl group to provide B-aryl NHC-borane derivatives. The developed synthetic method was applied to the synthesis of novel borane-containing liquid crystalline molecules having highly thermal stability.Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is an excellent biomarker for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer progression and metastasis. The most promising PSMA-targeted agents in the clinical phase are based on the Lys-urea-Glu motif, in which Lys and Glu are α-(l)-amino acids. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of β- and γ-amino acids in the S1 pocket on the binding affinity for PSMA. We synthesized and evaluated the β- and γ-amino acid analogues with (S)- or (R)-configuration with keeping α-(l)-Glu as the S1'-binding pharmacophore. The structure-activity relationship studies identified that compound 13c, a β-amino acid analogue with (R)-configuration, exhibited the most potent PSMA inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 3.97 nM. learn more The X-ray crystal structure of PSMA in complex with 13c provided a mechanistic basis for the stereochemical preference of PSMA, which can guide the development of future PSMA inhibitors. To better understand lipid membranes in living organisms, the study of intermolecular forces using the osmotic pressure technique applied to model lipid membranes has constituted the ground knowledge in the field of biophysics since four decades. However, the study of intermolecular forces in lipid systems other than phospholipids, like glycolipids, has gained a certain interest only recently. Even in this case, the work generally focuses on the study of membrane glycolipids, but little is known on new forms of non-membrane functional compounds, like microbial bolaform glycolipids. This work explores, through the osmotic stress method involving an adiabatic humidity chamber coupled to neutron diffraction, the short-range ( less then 2 nm) intermolecular forces of membranes entirely composed of interdigitated glucolipids. Experiments are performed at pH 6 when the glucolipid is partially negatively charged and for which we explore the effect of low (16 mM) and high (100 mM) ionic strength. We find that this system is characterized by primary and secondary hydration regimes insensitive and sensitive to ionic strength, respectively, and with typical decay lengths of λH1 = 0.
