The involved processes include not only the presence of cell proliferation and cell adhesion (to other cells and to the extracellular matrix), but also the secretion of matrix-degrading enzymes. This is as a result of cancer cells as well as macrophages, which are one of the most abundant types of immune cells in the tumour micro-environment. In large tumours, these tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) have a tumour-promoting phenotype, contributing to tumour proliferation and spread. In this paper, we extend a previous multiscale moving-boundary mathematical model for cancer invasion, by considering also the multiscale effects of TAMs, with special focus on the influence that their directional movement exerts on the overall tumour progression. Numerical investigation of this new model shows the importance of the interactions between pro-tumour TAMs and the fibrous ECM, highlighting the impact of the fibres on the spatial structure of solid tumour.We study the flow of electrical currents in spherical cells with a non-conducting core, so that current flow is restricted to a thin shell below the cell's membrane. Examples of such cells are fat storing cells (adipocytes). We derive the relation between current and voltage in the passive regime and examine the conditions under which the cell is electro-tonically compact. We compare our results to the well-studied case of electrical current flow in cylinder structures, such as neurons, described by the cable equation. In contrast to the cable, we find that for the sphere geometry (1) the voltage profile across the cell depends critically on the electrode geometry, and (2) the charging and discharging can be much faster than the membrane time constant; however, (3) voltage clamp experiments will incur similar distortion as in the cable case. We discuss the relevance for adipocyte function and experimental electro-physiology.Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key actors among soil microbial inhabitants, forming beneficial associations with most horticultural plants and crops (e.g., maize). For maize, the world most cultivated cereal, data on AMF species diversity in fields is sparse and even totally nonexistent in the southern part of Belgium where maize represents 8% of the cultivated area. In the present study, 14 maize fields in South Belgium under conventional, conversion, or organic management were analyzed for AMF diversity and species composition using 454 pyrosequencing. A large part (54%) of the 49 AMF species observed were unknown or have not been described in the literature. AMF diversity highly varied among fields, with the number of species ranging between 1 and 37 according to the field. A statistically significant effect of management was measured on AMF diversity, with the highest Hill index values (diversity and richness) under the organic management system compared with conventional management or conversion. They also highlight the rather high diversity or richness of AMF and the large portion of sequences not yet ascribed to species, thereby emphasizing a need to intensify AMF identification in cropping systems.Leptospirosis is an infectious, contagious disease highly important to the world pig industry, which causes reproductive loss in breeding herds. Endemic infections in a herd may produce little evidence of clinical disease despite resulting in economic losses. However, some epidemiological features of leptospirosis in midwestern Brazil, such as risk factors and prevalence of the disease, remain unclear. Therefore, this study focused on assessing the prevalence of the Leptospira spp. in intensive pig herds and associating its risk factors. A set of 900 blood samples, equally distributed between nursery, growing, and finishing pigs of 30 intensive farrow-to-finish farms, were analyzed using the microagglutination test (MAT), in order to detect anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies for 24 different Leptospira spp. serovars. An occurrence of 4.67% (55/342) seropositive samples were detected in fattening pigs. The variables associated with the disease occurrence were animals per square meter at fattening (OR 0.006, CI 95% 0.004-0.42, p = 0.0105) and pen division between growing and fattening pigs (OR 3.56, CI 95% 0.563-22.541, p = 0.185). Thus, the variables semi-hollow floor in the maternity (OR 16.66; CI 95% 2.17-128.2 and p = 0.006) and animals per trough at fattening (OR 0.08, CI 95% 0.009-0.87 and p = 0.025), observed in this study, highlight the importance of the fattening phase in the epidemiology of the disease, bringing information on risk factors involved in the occurrence and dissemination of leptospirosis in intensive pig herds.
To investigate the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the Core Outcome Measures Index-Neck (COMI-Neck) in patients undergoing cervical spine surgery.
A total of 177 patients undergoing cervical spine surgery for spinal disorders from April to December 2017 were enrolled. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) included EuroQOL, Neck Disability Index, and treatment satisfaction. To address whether the questionnaire's scores relate to other outcomes based on a predefined hypothesis, the correlations between the COMI-Neck and the other PROs were measured (Spearman's rank correlation coefficients). The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) of the COMI summary score was calculated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve with a 7-point Likert scale of satisfaction with the treatment results. To assess reproducibility, another group of 59 volunteers with chronic neck pain were asked to reply to the COMI-Neck twice with an interval of 7-14days.
The COMI summary score showed no floor or ceiling effects preoperatively or postoperatively.
