Some participants attributed their symptoms to preexisting medical conditions (e.g., asthma) and to heavy vaping. Some described a decline in exercise-related endurance since vaping. Some participants also reported that they experienced worse respiratory symptoms when using specific brands and products (e.g., JUUL and nicotine salt formulation). Conclusions This study provides powerful accounts from YA vapers about their experience of respiratory health symptoms that they ascribe to vaping. Future research is needed to evaluate the prevalence and severity, as well as the risk and protective factors, of adverse respiratory health symptoms associated with vaping. Addiction prevention and treatment efforts for YA vapers may help curtail adverse respiratory health impact from vaping.
To address the lack of validated patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments that define and quantify patient expectations in thyroid cancer surgery, we developed and initially validated ThyroidEx, a novel disease-specific PRO instrument.
Survey study.
Single-institution tertiary care cancer center.
An expert panel drafted an initial set of thyroid cancer-specific concepts, which was used in semistructured concept elicitation interviews with patients with thyroid cancer 4 weeks before and 8 weeks after surgery. Candidate items were generated per patient responses and refined via cognitive interviewing and additional review by the expert panel. The draft ThyroidEx was then preoperatively administered to a separate cohort undergoing thyroid cancer surgery to establish a final item set and initial psychometric evidence.
Prospective concept elicitation interviews generated 358 patient-elicited concepts (n = 15 patients). These were then placed into 70 unique subcategories from which 41 items were generatperative consultation and the consent process. While fertility is a widely studied public health issue, infertility among college students is rarely examined. Research on fertility among college students focuses primarily on pregnancy prevention. Often constructed as hyper-fertile, cohorts of women in graduate studies are struggling with fertility issues and left to suffer in silence. Objective This study aimed to identify barriers to access and gaps in available reproductive services to college attending women. Methods This multi-method, exploratory study employed online surveys (n = 37), semi-structured interviews (n = 5), and an assessment of fertility-related school health services available at universities nationally to understand issues related to infertility, including experience with and access to services. Results A near absence of fertility-related care on college campuses emerged nationally, while a clear need among female graduate students emerged locally. Perceptions of poor treatment and dismissal of concerns were prominent issues. Conclusions Findings suggest the need for self-advocacy, while highlighting the potential role of university and community supports for women suffering from the dual burden of being a student while struggling with fertility related issues.
To determine the impact of a new food scholarship program on nutrient intake and dietary quality.
College students (
 = 49), female (78%), single (76%), average age 28 years, and white (49%).
Fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat products and nonperishable foods were distributed twice a month. A one-group pretest post-test intervention compared baseline and 10 weeks data. Food security was measured and three-day food records assessed nutrient intake, Health Eating Index (HEI)-2015 (total and component) scores, and food group servings. Paired t-test at baseline and 10 weeks were performed (SPSS v25) (
 < 0.05).
Prevalence of food insecurity did not change (baseline 53%, 10 weeks 47%). Protein, (
 = 0.001), niacin (
 = 0.002), magnesium (
 = 0.034), phosphorous (
 = 0.039), potassium (
 = 0.019), and vegetable servings (
= 0.034) intake increased. Total HEI-2015 scores remained unchanged but HEI-2015 vegetable scores increased (
 = 0.023).
Increased intake of some nutrients and vegetable seased (p = 0.023). Conclusion Increased intake of some nutrients and vegetable servings were achieved with the food scholarship program.
Pain is a characteristic, unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pain is a subjective sensation, modulated by many factors such as age, sex, emotional state, national origin, or physical activity. Oxaliplatin cost Moreover, it is closely associated with intense physical activity, injuries, and traumas, which can significantly modulate pain tolerance.
We postulate that there are correlations between past injuries, physical activity, and intensity of pain perception (pain threshold and pain tolerance) in a population of healthy men and women.
Retrospective cohort study.
Level 4.
A total of 302 participants aged 18 to 32 years were included. The participants were divided into 2 groups (active and inactive individuals), in accordance with the scope of physical activity they had indicated. The test of pressure pain threshold and pressure pain tolerance was performed using an algometer.
Active women achieved significantly higher pain threshold and pain tolerance vapain sensation.
The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone-System is a major pathway in regulating blood pressure, glomerular filtration, and fluid homeostasis. During inflammatory diseases, generation of angiotensin-II might be disturbed leading to increased renin levels. Cardiac surgery and the use of cardiopulmonary bypass both induce inflammatory response and cardiovascular instability which can contribute to acute kidney injury (AKI).
To investigate whether renin levels are associated with hypotension and AKI.
Single center, prospective, observational study among patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
The primary endpoint was the occurrence of AKI within 72h after cardiac surgery. A total of 197 patients were available for the primary analysis. The median renin serum concentration was 40.2µU/ml (Q1, Q3, 9.3, 144.4) at baseline and 51.3µU/ml (Q1, Q3, 19.1, 167.0) 4h after cardiac surgery, whereas the difference between post- and pre-operation (Δ-renin) was 3.7µU/ml (Q1, Q3, -22.7, 50.9). Patients with an elevated Δ-renin developed significantly more often an AKI (43% versus 12.
