When the water is contaminated with bacteria the interaction causes substantial ambient air contamination due to aerosolization of live or injured microorganisms. This study investigates the behaviour of water droplets interacting with heated surfaces in the film boiling regime. A suggested mathematical model considers droplet shooting off conditions and following airborne droplet evolution due to cooling. The critical size of the droplet capable of taking off was modelled as a function of the wall temperature and droplet size. Following the departure from the hot surface, droplet cooling time mainly depends on the initial droplet radius while the influence of the ambient temperature is marginal. The experimental part of the study was focused on (1) investigation of the size of droplets capable of departing from the hot surface, and (2) evaluation of the influence of cooling time on the survivability of two common environmental bacterial species, Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis. Droplets with the sizes of up to one millimetre shooting off the hot surfaces were detected, which correlates with the theoretical results. It was found that, under realistic physical conditions, the process of liquid interaction with hot surface does not ensure an efficient microbial inactivation. It was also shown that the shortest cooling time was associated with higher survival rates of both bacterial strains used in this study. However, even for the longest cooling time of 15 seconds the amount of live bacteria in the aerosolized droplet carrier can be substantially high with recovery rates of approximately 50% for B. subtilis.Background Infectious gastroenteritis is a risk factor for the development of post-infectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome (PI-IBS). Recent clinical studies reported a higher prevalence of the intestinal parasite Blastocystis in IBS patients. Using a rat model, we investigated the possible association between Blastocystis infection, colonic hypersensitivity (CHS), behavioral disturbances and gut microbiota changes. Methods Rats were orally infected with Blastocystis subtype 4 (ST4) cysts, isolated from human stool samples. Colonic sensitivity was assessed by colorectal distension and animal behavior with an automatic behavior recognition system (PhenoTyper), the Elevated Plus Maze test and the Forced Swimming tests. Feces were collected at different time points after infection to study microbiota composition by 16 S rRNA amplicon sequencing and for short-chain fatty acid (SFCA) analysis. Results Blastocystis-infected animals had non-inflammatory CHS with increased serine protease activity. Infection was also associated with anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors. Analysis of fecal microbiota composition showed an increase in bacterial richness associated with altered microbiota composition. These changes included an increase in the relative abundance of Oscillospira and a decrease in Clostridium, which seem to be associated with lower levels of SCFAs in the feces from infected rats. Conclusions Our findings suggest that experimental infection of rats with Blastocystis mimics IBS symptoms with the establishment of CHS related to microbiota and metabolic shifts.Oxidative stress (OS) is associated with the onset of prostate cancer (PCa). The aims of this study are to examine whether OS biomarkers may be employed as external validating criteria for the diagnosis PCa. This case-control study recruited 204 subjects, 73 patients with PCa, 67 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and 64 healthy controls (HC) and assayed plasma prostate-specific antigen (PSA), protein thiol (-SH) groups, lipid hydroperoxides, carbonyl proteins (PCB), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), and total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP). -SH groups were significantly and inversely associated with PSA levels. PCa was characterized by lowered -SH groups and red blood cell TRAP levels, and higher PSA, AOPP and PCB levels as compared with BPH and HC. Support vector machine with 10-fold cross-validation showed that PSA values together with -SH groups, PCB and AOPP yielded a cross-validation accuracy of 96.34% for the differentiation of PCa from BPH and HC. The area under the ROC curve using PSA and -SH differentiating PCa from BPH and controls was 0.945. Moreover, lowered -SH, but not PSA, are associated with PCa metastasis and progression. PCa, its progression and metastatic PCa are characterized by lowered antioxidant defenses, especially lowered thiol groups, and increased oxidative stress toxicity, suggesting that these processes play a key role in the pathophysiology of PCa. An algorithm based on -SH and PSA values may be used to differentiate patients with PCa from those with BPH and controls.Understanding on sociodemographic variation of the co-occurrence of cardiovascular disease risk factors is crucial for planning future prevention strategies. We aimed at examining (1) the co-occurrence of smoking, obesity, hypertension and elevated serum cholesterol by education and marital status, and (2) its trends in different sociodemographic groups in Finland. We used data from cross-sectional health examination surveys among the general population (25-64 years) for 1997-2012 the National FINRISK Study and for 2017 the FinHealth 2017 Survey (n = 25036). A risk factor accumulation score with categories (1) zero, (2) one, (3) two, and (4) three or four elevated risk factors was the outcome in multinomial logistic regression. The risk factor score was more favourable among women, among high education groups, and slightly among participants living with a spouse. Among men, the lowest risk factor score class became more prevalent especially in the intermediate education group, which approached the highest education group over time. Our results indicate an overall transition towards a more favourable risk factor distribution. However, risk factor accumulation among the least educated remained emphasizing the need to develop and implement more targeted prevention interventions and public health policies to decrease the risk factor burden particularly in this group.
