Transplantation of macroencapsulated pancreatic islets within semipermeable membranes is a promising approach for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. This creates challenges in loading islets at the amount and density required to meet the practical demands of clinical usage. To overcome this challenge, we investigated the feasibility of using macroporous scaffolds made of an oxygen-permeable polymer, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) by culturing pancreatic islet-like three-dimensional tissue made of a rat pancreatic beta cell line on the scaffolds. With external oxygenation, the density and function of cells on the PDMS scaffold were more than three times and almost two times higher than those without oxygenation, respectively. This suggests that the oxygenation afforded by the PDMS scaffolds allows for high-density loading of islet tissue into the devices.
The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test is the gold standard for confirming the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in central precocious puberty (CPP). However, it is time-consuming and costly. Our aim was to search for a simpler diagnostic modality for CPP by 1) evaluating the performance of basal serum luteinizing hormone (LH), 2) constructing a practical scoring system, and 3) determining the optimal single sampling time for serum LH in the GnRH stimulation test.

This study explored the impact of a promotion and prevention regulatory focus on genital pain responding. Sex would typically endorse a promotion focus, whereas pain during sex is likely to provoke a prevention focus oriented toward harm avoidance and safety.
We induced gradually increasing vaginal pressure in a sample of 56 women using an intra-vaginal balloon that simulated potentially painful vaginal sensations. Women were first primed with a promotion vs prevention focus by making them list their ideals vs responsibilities as a sexual partner. We measured trait regulatory focus, pleasant and painful vaginal pressure sensations, sexual arousal, expectations, and approach-avoidance motivational tendencies.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of evidence in the craniomaxillofacial trauma literature. The secondary purpose is to determine if improvement in the quality of evidence has been made over the past 2 decades.
This retrospective cohort study analyzed clinical articles published in select craniomaxillofacial surgery journals. Patient-focused articles were selected. The year of publication (1999, 2009, 2019) was the primary predictor variable. Secondary predictor variables included study funding status, anatomical facial region (eg maxilla, mandible, and so on), specific journal, and journal impact factor. The level of evidence was determined using the Center of Evidence-Based Medicine criteria, which served as the outcome variable. The statistical analysis included descriptive, bivariate, and regression analysis.
The sample consisted of 469 craniomaxillofacial trauma articles, with 13.2% being published in 1999, 44.1% in 2009, and 42.6% in 2019. The majority of the studies (77.5%) were ort the practice of evidence-based medicine.
While there has been some improvement in the level of evidence in the craniomaxillofacial trauma literature over the past 2 decades, the current quality remains low, and further progress is needed to support the practice of evidence-based medicine.
To evaluate the effects of incremental doses of acepromazine on hemodynamics in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.
Prospective, experimental study.
Healthy, adult, mixed-breed dogs (two male and four female) weighing 16.8 ± 5.1 kg (mean ± standard deviation).
Dogs were anesthetized with propofol (7 mg kg
) intravenously (IV) and isoflurane. Thermodilution and arterial catheters were placed for hemodynamic monitoring and arterial blood sampling for blood gas analysis. Baseline measurements were performed with stable expired concentration of isoflurane (Fe'Iso) at 1.8%. Each dog was then administered four incremental acepromazine injections (10, 15, 25 and 50 μg kg
