World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are a method to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.
Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of its leveled up benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.
It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players are able to wear, since PvP is limited at a lower level. The average level of an item is listed on the character sheet.
The level of an item can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's a sign of the damage and quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.
The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its value. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are various theories on how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is usually very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.
However, this is not the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, because the level of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.
Item Stats
Stats on an item are a significant element in what determines the value of an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon and to motivate players to explore other weapons. The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.
Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times, at higher costs.
Affixes can also be used to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can provide the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or reducing the cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.
item upgrader can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.
Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within the range, unless it's a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. Similar to base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the odds of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in the early game than later ones because most players value more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each new level of item. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be bought at the store or crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..
The performance of an can be affected by the luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by five percent.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
