Studies investigating patterns of tobacco use by race often aggregate non-Black and non-Hispanic racial minorities into the "Other" category, masking important differences. Pooling 10 years (2009-2018) of National Survey on Drug Use and Health data (n = 52,424), we estimated the prevalence and proportion of individual tobacco product use and patterns of single, dual, and polytobacco use overall and by sex for youth (12-17) and adult (18 +) non-Hispanic Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN), Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander (NH/PI), and multiracial respondents. Cigarette prevalence was highest among AI/AN youth (8.6%) and adults (37.3%). For youth and adults, the AI/AN subgroup had the highest prevalence of single (9.2% youth, 35.8% adults) and dual (2.8% youth, 6.6% adults) use, followed by multiracial respondents. Furthermore, among tobacco users, AI/AN and multiracial youth and adults had the highest proportions of dual and poly use compared to other races. Appropriate tobacco prevention and cessation interventions should consider variation in tobacco use among non-Hispanic "Other" subgroups.Anxiety has significant consequences for maternal and infant health, and Mexican immigrant mothers are at significantly high-risk. This study examined whether maternal depressive symptoms and trauma are related to anxiety symptoms in perinatal Mexican immigrants. Data were collected from 103 Mexican women residing in the Midwestern United States who were pregnant or up to two years postpartum. Half were aged 30-34. The majority had two or more children and low socio-economic status. Linear regression analyses predicted current anxiety symptoms from current maternal depression symptoms, trauma history, and socio-demographics. Anxiety symptoms were significantly related to depressive symptoms (B = 0.87, 95% CI   0.73, 1.01) and trauma. Compared to women with no trauma history, women who experienced more than ten traumas had increased anxiety symptoms (B = 7.15, 95% CI 0.34, 13.96). Perinatal Mexican women with higher depression symptoms and trauma have increased anxiety symptoms, increasing the need for more comprehensive screening. The population of Israel is ethnically diverse, and individuals from different ethnic groups share specific genetic variations. These variations, which have been passed on from common ancestors, are usually reported in public databases as rare variants. Here, we aimed to identify ethnicity-based benign copy number variants (CNVs) and generate the first Israeli CNV database. We applied a data-mining approach to the results of 10,193 chromosomal microarray tests, of which 2150 tests were from individuals of 13 common ethnic backgrounds (n ≥ 10). We found 165 CNV regions (> 50 kbp) that are unique to specific ethnic groups (uCNVRs). The frequency of more than 19% of these uCNVRs is between 1 and 20% of the common ethnic origin, while their frequency in the overall cohort is between 0.5 and 1.6%. Of these 165 uCNVRs, 98 are reported as variants of unknown significance or as not available in dbVar; we postulate that these uCNVRs should be annotated as either "likely benign" or "benign". The ethnic-specific CNVs extracted in this study will allow geneticists to distinguish between relevant pathogenic genomic aberrations and benign ethnicity-related variations, thus preventing variant misinterpretation that may lead to unnecessary pregnancy terminations.Streptococcus mutans is considered to be a major bacterium involved in dental caries, and the control of virulence mechanisms is fundamental to prevent disease. Probiotics present a promising preventive method; however, the use of probiotics requires its incorporation into delivery materials to facilitate oral colonization. Thus, we performed a comprehensive study examining preventive effects of Lactobacillus paracasei 28.4-enriched gellan hydrogel materials to inhibit S. mutans in planktonic and biofilm states, addressing its influence in the production of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) and altered gene expression of several cariogenic virulence factors. L. paracasei 28.4, a strain isolated from the oral cavity of a caries-free individual, was incorporated in three gellan hydrogels (0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% w/v). The pretreatment with probiotic-gellan formulations provided a release of L. paracasei cells over 24 h that was sufficient to inhibit the planktonic growth of S. find more mutans, independent of the gellan concentrations and pH variations. This pretreatment also had inhibitory activity against S. mutans biofilms, exhibiting a reduction of 0.57 to 1.54 log10 in CFU/mL (p  less then  0.0001) and a decrease of 68.8 to 71.3% in total biomass (p  less then  0.0001) compared with the control group. These inhibitory effects were associated with the decreased production of EPS by 80% (p  less then  0.0001) and the downregulation of luxS, brpA, gbpB, and gtfB genes. The gellan formulation containing L. paracasei 28.4 exhibited probiotic effects for preventing S. mutans growth, biofilm formation, and production of cariogenic factors to suggest possible use in tooth decay prevention.
COVID-19 required rapid innovation in health systems, in the context of an infection which placed healthcare professionals at high risk; general practice has been a key component of that innovative response. In Ireland, GPs were asked to work in a network of community assessment hubs. A focused training programme in infection control procedures/clinical use of personal protective equipment (PPE) was rapidly developed in advance. University departments of general practice were asked to develop and deliver that training.
The aim of this article is to describe infection control procedure training in Ireland, the uptake by GPs and the initial experience of GPs working in this unusual environment.
Two anonymous cross-sectional online surveys are sent to participants in training courses.
Survey 1 followed completion of training; survey 2 followed establishment of the hubs.
Six hundred seventy-five participants (including 439 GPs, 156 GP registrars) took part in the training. Two hundred thirty-nine (50.3%) out of four hundred seventy-five responded to Survey 1-over 95% reported an increase in confidence in the use of PPE.
