Thyroid storm is a rare but life-threatening emergency that prompts urgent intervention to halt its potentially disastrous outcomes. There is not much literature available on thyroid storm in head neck trauma and non-thyroid/parathyroid head neck surgery. Due to rarity of thyroid storm in head and neck trauma/surgery patients, its diagnosis becomes challenging, is often misdiagnosed and causes delay in the diagnosis and management. Therefore, the aim of this work was to compile, analyze and present details to develop a consensus and augment available literature on thyroid storm in this group of patients.
A comprehensive literature search of the last 30 years was performed on PUBMED/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Science Citation Index for thyroid storm using MeSH words and statistical analyses were performed.
Seven articles describing seven cases of thyroid storm were reviewed. All patients required medical management and one patient (14.3%) required adjunctive surgical management. Burch and Wartofsky Diagnostic criteria for thyroid storm were used in diagnosis of 42% patients. Time of diagnosis varied from immediately upon presentation to formulating a retrospective diagnosis of having a full-blown thyroid storm at 4 days post presentation. It was misdiagnosed and unthought of initially in majority of these cases, (71.4%) were not diagnosed in the first day of hospital stay.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare tumor originated from neural crest cells with the potential for recurrence and metastasis. The peak age for the disease is during the first year after birth. The current therapy is primarily surgery. The patient reported here is the first case of MNTI treated with metformin.
A case of a 4-month-old infant with a history of swelling in the mouth for 1 month.
The tumor was diagnosed using radiology, pathology, and immunohistochemistry, and it was performed with complete surgical resection. Unfortunately, the tumor recurred 3 months after surgery.
We prescribed metformin for the infant.
Currently, after 9 months of treatment, the tumor is well controlled without apparent side effects.

We assessd the long-term outcomes from a large prospective cohort of men diagnosed with prostate cancer managed with active surveillance and determined the clinical prognostic factors that may predict the risk of metastases.
We retrospectively reviewed data of men enrolled on active surveillance at our institution between 1990 and 2018 with low or intermediate risk disease (stage cT1-2, prostate specific antigen less than 20 ng/ml, and biopsy Grade Group [GG]1-2). Patients were classified into 3 groups by diagnostic GG and prostate specific antigen density. Primary outcome was metastatic prostate cancer detected on imaging or at prostatectomy. In addition, upgrade at surveillance biopsy, active treatment, and overall and prostate cancer specific survival outcomes were assessed. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used.
A total of 1,450 men met the inclusion criteria. Median followup was 77 months (IQR 49-114). The 7-year metastasis-free survival rate was 99%. An experiment was conducted on thrust generation of four basic fin designs, where different portions of their chord was disengaged from the body step-by-step. The disengagement occurred for each quarter of the chord, starting from the trailing edge towards the leading edge. It was found that the fins with free root chord (minimal attachment to the body) could generate thrust slightly less than the fully constrained fins (full attachment). In addition, it was shown that thrust generation efficiency kept increasing while disengaging the chord further, and reached the maximum for free root chord. This may show that a more efficient and yet powerful fin can be produced with such a deviation from the nature.Aerobic hydrolysis of stover before anaerobic digestion is beneficial to improve the biodegradability of corn stover. Aerobic hydrolysis of corn stover at 43 °C was conducted to investigate the effects of hydrolysis time (0 h, 8 h, 16 h, and 24 h) on the degradation of lignocellulose from corn stover and material conversion. Further anaerobic digestion and energy consumption analysis with the digestion temperature of 36 °C were carried out. The accumulation rate of volatile fatty acids began to slow down after 16 h of hydrolysis, and the concentration of acetic acid reached 221.85 mmol/L at 24 h of hydrolysis. The degradation rate of lignocellulose was obviously increased after hydrolysis. When the hydrolysis time was 16 h, it reached the maximum cumulative methane production with 268.75 ml/g VS. In terms of biogas production and energy conversion efficiency, it is more appropriate to choose 16 h as hydrolysis time in biogas engineering.Older adults with sensory deficits are at higher risk for developing cognitive impairment and dementia. It remains uncertain if the link between sensory and cognitive functioning reflects a common underlying factor or whether sensory deficits directly undermine cognitive processing. This issue was addressed by comparing behavioral and event-related potential responses of 16 older and 16 young adults during a working memory paradigm that parametrically varied visual contrast level (100%, 69%, 22%) and cognitive task load (1-4 face pairs to remember). The groups were well-matched on demographic and neuropsychological variables; however, older adults had worse corrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. link3 The study's major finding was an interaction between visual contrast level and task load on performance accuracy (percent of correct responses) and the allocation of resources for decision making/updating (as indexed by the P3b amplitude). The negative impact of degraded visual processing was greater at higher levels of task demand. This result suggests that a shared pool of processing resources is used to mediate cognitive operations and manage the processing of degraded images. The study also demonstrated that older adults reach the limits of their processing capacity at lower levels of task load. The interaction between visual degradation and task demand, accompanied by the age-related reduction in available processing resources highlight the increased vulnerability of older adults. Specifically, an age-associated decline in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity puts older adults at risk for depleting their limited resources in the service of processing degraded visual images. The results of this study underscore the potential importance of optimizing vision in older adults to help mitigate age-associated cognitive decline.
To evaluate morphologic features of symptomatic and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms in Asian patients.
Two hundred sixty four continuous candidates with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) were retrospectively identified from a tertiary hospital database between January 2017 and May 2019. The patients meeting inclusion criteria were divided into symptomatic or ruptured AAA (srAAA) and asymptomatic AAA (asAAA) groups. Their computed tomography angiographies were reconstructed using centerline technique and the geometric features of AAAs between the 2 groups were compared.
One hundred two patients fulfilled selection criteria (mean age 71years, 80 men), comprising 35 srAAAs and 67 asAAAs. There was no essential association between gender, smoking or hypertension, and AAA-associated symptoms or rupture. The maximum diameter (5.8±1.4cm vs. 5.0±0.9cm; P=0.001), length (8.8±0.6cm vs. 7.0±0.3cm; P=0.002), and intraluminal thrombus (ILT) thickness (1.7±0.2cm vs. 1.3±0.1cm; P=0.039) of AAAs were independent rion when contemplating intervention, particularly for borderline and smaller aneurysms.The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) highly expressed in the brain, and also in some peripheral tissues. GHSR activity is evoked by the stomach-derived peptide hormone ghrelin and abrogated by the intestine-derived liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2). In vitro, GHSR displays ligand-independent actions, including a high constitutive activity and an allosteric modulation of other GPCRs. Beyond its neuroendocrine and metabolic effects, cumulative evidence shows that GHSR regulates the activity of the mesocorticolimbic pathway and modulates complex reward-related behaviors towards different stimuli. Here, we review current evidence indicating that ligand-dependent and ligand-independent actions of GHSR enhance reward-related behaviors towards appetitive stimuli and drugs of abuse. We discuss putative neuronal networks and molecular mechanisms that GHSR would engage to modulate such reward-related behaviors. Finally, we briefly discuss imaging studies showing that ghrelin would also regulate reward processing in humans.
