Ignition key
The ignition key is the mechanical component that turns the vehicle on. It also unlocks the trunk and doors. Certain keys can be used for additional purposes like a panic button trunk release, liftgate release, or tailgate release.
A change in the blade of your key can cause problems. A locksmith registered with Volvo can make you a new key. They are usually able to cut keys without the car.
Certain Volvo keys are marked with specific features, such as red or restricted keys. They are controlled by the way the car was delivered from the factory. Dealers can order an upgrade to disable the restricted key functions. VIDA can be used by the dealer to accomplish this. You can do this yourself, if you have all the necessary tools and software.
The key fobs are either orange or red in color. The shells of the special keys can be removed before they are used on a different vehicle. Keys can be programmed by a dealer or your own. Volvo key fobs don't require "virginizing".
Remote Key
The remote key allows you to open the doors and begin the car. It also allows you to control the locks and activate or deactivate some functions, like panorama roofs or power windows. The key also has a restricted function that blocks motion sensing*. You can buy a key with this feature from the dealer (you require proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. This key is branded in red or orange. The color of the key shell release slider matches the color of the key blade. Switching a key with an old shell will not alter the function.
Follow VIDA's easy instructions to program (add) the new Remote. It doesn't have to be a "virgin key". Relax in a driver's chair with the door closed. Press the lock button on the new remote. The side marker light will blink, indicating the key is programmable.
Keyless Entry Key
A single press of the keyless entry button locks the car and arms the alarm, a long press closes all windows and panoramic roof*. The key has a small button cell battery. The dealer can cut you a brand new keyless entry key, or a locksmith who is registered with Volvo can as well. They can also program keys to your Volvo. truck key cover can be swapped on the key fob and it will function interchangably.
Key Fob
A key fob is a part of the VOLVO key that contains the keyless entry and lock functions. It also comes with a panic key that will activate the alarm in your vehicle. The key fob also has a button that can close your windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key fob is housed in a plastic shell that is the same color as your car and also has silver buttons. you can change these shells between keys and the function will remain unchanged.
A dealer can cut an additional blade for your key fob. A Volvo-registered locksmith can also do this, but may require proof of ownership. You can also use blank keys to copy the emergency blade. However, you will have to program the key through VIDA to make it work inside your vehicle.
